Teen Summer Reading Contest

June 1-September 2

Teens ages 11-18 or anyone entering 6th grade and leaving 12th grade

How to Win

·         Read something (a book, magazine, graphic novel, manga, audio book, or e-book) or attend a free library program.

·         For each item read or program attended, submit a raffle entry.

·         Enter online, or drop a ticket in the raffle box in the TeenSpace.

·         Prizes will be drawn weekly at each branch.

  • Summer Reading Kickoff -- Saturday, June 4, 1-4pm

    • Gaming, crafts and food in the TeenSpace.  Flash mob dance at 2pm and other activities throughout the library.

  • Summer Feeding Site -- Monday – Friday, June 6-July 29

    • The Covington branch is participating in the 2016 Summer Food Service Program; sponsored by the Covington Public School District. Lunch will be available 1:00pm-1:30pm and a snack will be available from 3:00pm - 3:30pm. The program is for youth ages 18 and under and is FREE. 

  • Les Classes de Français* -- Mondays in June (June 6, 13, 20 & 27) at 11am

    • This class is for youth just starting out in French.  Students are immersed in the French language, learning basic vocabulary and grammatical structures through crafts, games and songs.  Classes taught by teachers from L’ Alliance Française de Cincinnati.

  • Masterpieces in the Making* -- Monday, June 6 at 2pm

    • Join the Kennedy Heights Arts Center to explore famous artists’ works and try your hand at their techniques.  This month we will explore the sculpture artist, Sam Gilliam.  Create your own paper sculpture.

  • Teen Pop-Ups -- Tuesdays in June, July and August (June 7, 14, 21 & 28; July 5, 12, 19 & 26; August 2) at 2pm

    • Pop into the TeenSpace every Tuesday to craft, watch a movie or game.

  • LGBT Film Fest -- Thursday evenings in June (June 9, 16, 23 & 30) at 6pm for all ages

    • Celebrate pride month with our LGBT film series. Films: Stonewall, Dallas Buyers Club, MILK, The Danish Girl. 

  • Write Now! -- Saturdays, June 11; July 23; August 13 at 2pm

    • A space for teen writers to discuss poetry, fiction, memoir, songs, plays, graphic novels, and more. The class will offer writing prompts and activities, readings, and optional feedback on work. Bring your favorite pen and join us for some fun with words.

  • Book Blathers* -- Wednesdays, June 15 & July 20 at 11:30am

    • Join the Teen Book Club!  In June we are discussing Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol.  In July we are discussing Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles.  Pick up your copy of the book at the Reference Desk.

  •  How to Hip Hop -- Saturday, June 25 at 2pm

    • Drop in to learn some hip hop moves from local dancer and choreographer, Steve Irwin.

  • AniManga Club -- Tuesdays, June 28; July 26; August 30 at 6pm

    • Watch Anime classics or discover new favs.  Enjoy Japanese snacks and manga drawing too!

  • At the Table -- Wednesday, July 6 & Thursday, July 7 from 10am-2pm

    • Learn to cook yummy recipes using fruits, vegetables and herbs from local sources.  Classes are a joint effort of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development.  Lunch and refreshments will be provided each day. 

  • MakerCamp -- Fridays in July (July 8, 15, 22 & 29) at 2pm

    • A community for young makers interested in DIY, making, creating, crafting, hacking, tinkering and learning.  Explore a variety of projects each day via Google + and Make magazine.

  • Masterpieces in the Making* -- Monday, July 11 at 2pm

    • Join the Kennedy Heights Arts Center to explore famous artists’ works and try your hand at their techniques.  This month we will explore the artist, Henri Matisse.  Create your own painting with scissors.

  • Loop Labz* -- Thursday, July 14 at 4pm

    • Learn to create songs in minutes regardless of your music experience during this beat-making workshop with the Music Resource Center of Cincinnati.

  • The True Body Project for Girls* -- Thursday, July 21 from 10am-4pm

    • This day-long camp is for girls who write, draw, dance or do all of the above.  The True Body Project is dedicated to helping girls connect, move and inspire through easy movement, writing and art-making.

  • Masterpieces in the Making* -- Monday, August 1 at 2pm

    • Join the Kennedy Heights Arts Center to explore famous artists’ works and try your hand at their techniques.  This month we will explore the artist, Vincent Van Gogh.  Create your own still life painting of marigolds.
